US News publishes list of physician-ranked medical residency programs

Thousands of medical students will submit their final preferred list of postgraduate residency programs to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) on Feb. 26 after a year of interviews, research, and plenty of hand-wringing to determine where they might like to start their careers in medicine.

Stirring up the high-pressured match season a little more, US News & World Report this week published a ranking from the physician social network Doximity of U.S. medical residencies based on thousands of surveys from physicians who have completed internal medicine residencies in the United States. The surveys were sent through web notifications and emails to 18,695 members of the social network.

Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston achieved the top nods along with Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. All three received 600 nominations from the physicians surveyed, and following close in line is the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.

Each of the physicians Doximity surveyed completed a U.S. residency in internal medicine. Approximately 3,400 responded (18 percent), sending in approximately 2.7 nominations apiece for an internal medicine residency. The survey ran from mid-December to Feb. 10, representing around 1,300 hospitals and every state except Alaska and Wyoming.

Medical students wringing their hands about their futures might use this survey to inform their selection process. But the question remains: should they?

A list like this could easily be associated with other well-known rankings by US News, including the Best Colleges list that many high school students turn to annually. US News’ Best Hospitals ranking also brings huge marketing power to those hospitals and health systems ordained at the top of the list.

But Ben Harder, general manager of health and science at US News, said this list is “definitely not a U.S. News ranking” in an email exchange Friday.

“U.S. News builds nearly all of its rankings on objective quality data,” said Harder. “Unfortunately, objective clinical data on residencies is nonexistent.”

In the explainer piece Harder wrote online for US News, he notes a few problems with the objectivity of the data Doximity collected while also citing its potential to influence students.

In the surveys, physicians tended to nominate medical residencies near their own practices, while the South and West were underrepresented. Respondents were also more likely to be subspecialists and not internists (so it’s questionable whether their opinions of internal medicine residencies is the best source for a ranking).

Doximity also surveyed residency and fellowship directors, whose responses were pooled with the physicians’ at equal weight, despite the potential for bias.

“A few institutions did have three or four who responded, while most had no more than one, so it’s reasonable to take the nominations from that subgroup with a grain of salt,” said Harder. “At the same time, a large majority of nominations for all of the programs came from doctors who didn’t have a personal affiliation with that program.”

So with these data limitations, why is this survey even relevant for medical students?

Harder wrote online that the list’s “insight into programs’ reputations could inform their preferences, particularly if they are concerned about how future colleagues might judge their medical pedigree.”

“It certainly responds to the desire of medical students for information about the training programs,” wrote Dr. Joanne Conroy, the chief healthcare officer at the American Association of Medical Colleges, in an email exchange. “This is especially relevant as they are making their priority lists for submission to the NRMP.”

Dr. Conroy does not expect this list to affect this year’s match season since most applicants have already submitted their final selections.

What do you think of this list? Would you rely on it based on the data?

Sonakshi Sinha declines Mani Ratnam’s next starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s comeback is the news recording top position and above that Sonakshi Sinha’s rejection to feature opposite her has created a lot of buzz. Sonakshi’s father Shatrughan Sinha narrated the situation remarking, "She loved the role and it was really tough for her to let go of the offer. But she had prior commitments and didn't have the required dates. But she will definitely work with Mani Sir in the future." It’s not the first flick Sonakshi has turned down. And the Oscar goes to... Bollywood directors choose their best film

Sujoy Ghosh: "I want Stephen Frears' Philomena to win. There's no way it'd win. But that's the one I love the most. She is the one who stayed with me."
Sudhir Mishra: "My Oscar for Best Film would have to go to Martin Scorcese's The Wolf Of Wall Street. It's Scorcese's best film since Good Fellas. People who have objected to the tone of the film don't understand it's the world that Scorcese has depicted that's squirmy, and not the way it is portrayed. It's a world of corruption and depravity and the film goes at it full-on."

Ananth Mahadevan: "Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave. The depiction of the dilemma of a man unjustly sold as a slave captures a regrettable chapter of American history. Steve McQueen paints a heart-rending picture. I prefer this human drama to the other nominees."

Shoojit Sircar: "It's a toss-up between Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity and Martin Scorcese's The Wolf Of Wall Street."

Amole Gupte: "My choice is Gravity. It's the 21st Century Solaris"

Ajay Bahl: "I loved The Wolf Of Wall Street. I think its Leonardo di Caprio's best performance to date."

Raj Nidimoru: "Alfosno Cuaron's Gravity hands-down. It's a spectacular achievement where unprecedented craft meets beautiful human emotions. A spectacle we experience only once in a while. What is interesting is that the principal actors have not been nominated. But the film on the whole shines over the others."

Bejoy Nambiar:
"Gravity is my choice, though I loved The Wolf Of Wall Street a lot more. But I still think Gravity is a path breaking cinematic experience .It will almost surely take the Brest Picture Oscar."

Prawaal Raman: "12 Years A Slave. It beautifully portrays the spirit of survival against all odds."

Santosh Sivan: "Gravity is awesome. It touches a new cinematic level."

Sahil Sangha: "As a diehard Scorcese fan I'd want to see The Wolf Of Wall Street win. Gravity is another favourite because it is a rare exception that given the technical boundaries it has pushed, it still touches us as a human story. Jean-Marc Vallee's Dallas Buyers Club and Philomena are also excellent. You have successfully asked the toughest question of the year and I'm suddenly not envying the Oscar jury one bit!"

Movie News The New Kevin Hart and Kaley Cuoco Movie Sounds Crazy Awesome

http://meroknowledge.blogspot.com/
Kevin Hart continues to realize his plans for world domination in 2014. He teamed up with Ice Cube and found serious box office success with Ride Along (because Ice Cube has clearly found a formula... and he's sticking to it... no matter what). He's also got a Valentine's Day movie with Michael Ealy headed our way (About Last Night), and Think Like A Man Too will hit theaters in June. Now throw into the mix an upcoming romantic comedy called The Wedding Ringer, and we've got more Kevin Hart than we know what to do with. But this is a good thing.
Hart will be teaming up with The Big Bang Theory actor Kaley Cuoco, who plays a bridezilla with a socially-challenged fiancé, Josh Gad (pictured above in a photo from Cuoco's Instagram page). And by "socially-challenged" we mean that he has to hire a fake Best Man (Hart) and fake groomsmen because he has no friends in real life. These three  are sure to make a great comedic team, but they've got a lot of backup in terms of awesomeness with this project. Director Jeremy Garelick wrote the screenplay for The Break-Up, and — with an excellent supporting cast that includes Olivia Thirlby, Affion Crocket and Jenifer Lewis — it's safe to say that we have plenty to get excited about. Crocket is the guy who's been bringing us those insane rapper parodies over the years and Thirlby will play Cuoco’s sister, who starts catching feelings for Hart's character. Sounds like a hilarious time to us!

10 Mistakes 'American Horror Story' Needs to Stop Making

http://meroknowledge.blogspot.com/
American Horror Story has finished its third season with one of the most entertaining episodes in the past two years. But, honestly, the naming of Cordelia Foxx as Supreme was a twist we saw coming. There wasn’t much character development for her, or any of the people who survived to the final episode, to bring a sense of closure. There were so many dropped plot-points and extraneous characters, and something’s got to give. These past two seasons of American Horror Story have been sloppy and don’t shine a candle to Season 1.
1. Keep It Simple. These past two seasons had so much going, a satisfying conclusion was nearly impossible. Coven focused on everyone but the coven – a sadistic slave owner, vengeance-obsessed voodoo priestess, crazy Christians, an axe murderer, witch-hunters, and zombies all stole focus from the witches and their storyline. It’s hard enough to put that in a cohesive sentence let alone a cohesive season. Asylum had a lot going on, too. There was a horror-movie style serial killer, Nazi doctor, mutant horde, demon possession, and aliens. It’s just sloppy storytelling to have a world with all  those things existing in the same place. This isn’t The Avengers. Why not have a guest appearance by Falcor the flying dog?

2. Don’t Forget Character Development. Despite great lines and the highest caliber of actors to date, there were so many extraneous characters played by star names the series ignored core characters. The first episode and final episode featured the same characters, but we didn’t learn more about them over the course of the season. Still, Jessica Lange is such an amazing actor that she did so much with a pretty one-dimensional character: a snarky woman obsessed with immortality.

3. Less Stunt Casting. Part of the appeal of American Horror Story is the cast returns in new and interesting ways. With big names, there’s pressure to keep extraneous characters on the show longer. Then they have to conveniently leave before the season finale. Why did we know more about Delphine LaLaurie than the titular coven of witches? Her character didn’t further the plot at all. Patti LuPone’s character was resurrected for no logical reason. The Axeman?!?

4. Keep the Characters Together. The first two seasons kept all the characters in the same place, which allowed for more story and character development. So much action took place outside of Miss Robichaux's Academy that the coven lost focus. There was no reason why the school couldn’t have been Delphine’s old estate with her buried in the backyard. Why couldn’t Angela Bassett and Patti LuPone play members of the Witches Council? These detours robbed us from getting to know some amazing characters like Misty Day, Myrtle Snow, and Zoe Benson.

5. Don’t Drop the Ball on Important Plot Points. The writers come up with really great ideas then throw them away in favor of plotholes. Zoe had an interesting power with her killer vag, she defeated super-witch Marie Laveau’s magic, and reanimated a ghost. Why wasn’t she the Supreme or the Antichrist or something more interesting than Kyle’s girlfriend? How could Queenie ressurect Misty Day but not Zoe? Queenie left to go study voodoo with Marie but didn’t come back with any new power. These are all missed opportunities.

6. Know How It's Going to End. It’s nice when a show includes clues for the discerning watcher. However, some shows Lost have made it a valid choice for writers to not know how things will end. The first episode introduces Zoe in Coven and aliens in Asylum but nothing happens at all. It also seems the writers didn’t know who the Supreme was going to be. All signs pointed to Zoe or Madison. Conveniently, having Madison’s death make Cordelia the Supreme is an interesting mystery to leave unsolved. But it seems more a result of sloppy storytelling than intention. If Cordelia was set to be the Supreme all along at least make her a more vital part of the series. There was never a scene of an actual class at this school.

7. Give Characters the Exit/Death they Deserve. In Asylum, Sister Mary Eunice becomes possessed by the Devil and becomes the most interesting character on the show. She had a Sam/Diane attraction to Nazi Dr. Arthur Arden. They both were major antagonists but died in anticlimactic ways with no resolution to their storylines.

8. No More Racism.
The Nazi storyline didn’t come to a crescendo last season, so what was the purpose of going to Anti-Semitism? This season’s irresponsible treatment of its black characters was also an epic fail. It's completely implausible for an immortal super witch, who charges 10,000 a spell, to spend her free time doing hair at a ratchet beauty salon. It didn’t come off as ironically humorous as much as flat out racist. The season-long slavery arc was also a bit much.

9. Don’t Shock to Shock. The multiple molesting moms this season were gratuitous because they didn’t further the story or their sons’ characters. If you're going to go there at least make a point.

10. More Lily Rabe!
She’s the best part of the past two seasons.
‘Nuff said.

How to make money on Ebay, Buy low, sell high

How to make money on Ebay, Buy low, sell high

This is a guide, a work in progress on how to make money on ebay.  There are many different opinions on this subject and mine is just another one.  But I do feel I have some good ideas that I will share with you.

Buy low, sell high, or for at least more than you bought it for.  How and What?

How do you buy? I have come to the realization that knowing the right people, business is extremely important.  Here are a couple of ways I have bought items to sell, either on Ebay or to sell in Flea markets:

Auctions: Auctions are very good, I love merchandise auctions and moving or estate auctions.  Recently I went to an auction at a very large flea market in Central florida, this was a wholesaler of novelty type items.  At these auctions you may have to buy in larger quantities but if the item is a good seller buying in larger quantities is something you should want to do anyways.
From other ebayers, this is not usually my first suggestion but you can often find someone selling large lots of items, I found someone selling 5000 stress toys on ebay, where I was able to buy them at $.15 each, and can sell them for over $.30 each, not bad to double your money.
Yard sales is a hit or a miss typle of buying location,  If you get up early and search the sales, typically look for items that you have a knowledge about, or bring a blackberry to search ebay while at the yard sale.
Outlets, especially if you are located in a place where you can buy from a certain outlet where the rest of the world may not be able to so easily.  (see example below)
We are located in Florida, hence the name Florida Connections - HSN or Home Shopping Network is located in Florida.  HSN only has 3 outlets where they sell returns or off the shelf items.  HSN is extremely popular and we who are located near the outlets have a great niche to sell.  Think of your local area is there something near by that maybe the rest of the country doesn't have such good access too.

Sell what you know....I can't stress that enough.  If you worked in a video store for years. Should you try to sell women's clothing or videos, not only do you know videos you may very well know where you can buy them cheap.

Another example, again from Florida, I have Disney, Citrus, Universal, and many other popular locations, I can find people selling Disney items cheap... what do you have in your area.

Now how do I sell it on Ebay... Wow that is a hard topic, changes all the time depending on how the market is going.  Lately I have liked selling items in an Ebay Store, cheap to list, and stays on Ebay longer.  How to price?  Depends if you item will only have a few people looking at it, IE maybe you are selling a rare picture of Howard Hughes, How many people are going to search for that, therefore you need to put a bit higher of a minimum.  Maybe you are selling Titleist golf balls, a very common item, you can list that lower and anticipate that sellers will bring it up to a "normal" selling price.

How about shipping, I have learned from many hard lessons that I will not sell "breakable" items, too much work, but again if you have a great facility that can pack items exceptionally well, then go for it.

Three ways to make money playing video games

We bring you some Three ways on how to turn your gaming habit into a handy earner
Everyone knows there are prizes galore to be won if keen gamers decide to take up the slightly bizarre title of “professional gamer”, with competitions offering large financial rewards for the very best.
But what about if you just want to earn a bit of pocket money from your usual gaming habit without making the leap from “amateur” to “professional”?
Video games forums are awash with what are perhaps somewhat embellished tales of the financial rewards available, but there can be more than a few pennies to be made if you are shrewd.
Do not assume this is easy or some get-rich-quick checklist – if making money from casual gaming was then everyone would be doing it.
But away from the lights of video games competitions, here are three ways to turn your gaming routine into a tidy little earner.

1) Game testing
Game testing or “play testing” is where large video game companies employ video game testers, who test games in development and report any problems or glitches they discover.
Although this may sound like a perfect job, approach this money-making scheme with caution.
Websites such as The Tough Life of a Games Tester highlight that this is often not particularly well paid, and that you will not necessarily be able to play games you actually like.
All video games testers sign non-disclosure agreements, so bear this in mind – as well as some of the anonymous comments below – before embarking on a job as a “play tester”.
One tester says: “Imagine your favourite movie. Now take your favourite 30-second clip from that movie. Now watch that 30-second clip over and over again, 12 hours a day, every day for two months. When you've done that, tell me if what you've been doing is watching movies all day.”
Another complains: “They flat-out tell you that what makes a good employee is the number of bugs you find and it is this number that will determine if you are kept on or not.”
Here is one games tester (rather annoyingly) boasting about his job, but also hesitating over what he is able to say.

2) Gold and item farming
The buying and selling of virtual goods is nothing new, but with some games operating a sort of in-game auction house, there is money to be made.
This method arguably exploded with Diablo III’s, the action role playing game in which characters choose one of five classes (Witch Doctor, Barbarian, Wizard, Monk or Demon Hunter), and are tasked with defeating Diablo, the Lord of Terror.
Sadly makers Blizzard have announced that from March 2014 both its gold and real-money auction houses will be shut down, meaning you have around four months to get stuck in.
Blizzard take $1 out of each sale, as well as another 15 per cent when you pay via PayPal, but some players have claimed they have made as much as $10,000 by harvesting and then selling gold on the auction house.
A Reddit user named WishboneTheDog included screenshots of his PayPal account as proof of his apparent $10,000 earnings.
Reddit user WishboneTheDog posted screenshots of his PayPal account to show his earnings
The user writes: “I have never botted, scammed, used any of the number of exploits, or cheated in any way whatsoever.
“Before this game, I never made any money off of what I did because it was against the rules. Investing and trading in the item markets is part of how I have my fun, it wouldn't make sense for me to cheat.”
Blizzard said they were removing Diablo III’s auction house as it “undermines Diablo’s core gameplay”.
3) Unofficial guides or walthroughs
As I have written in a previous post, as far as I am concerned how-to guides and walkthroughs ruin games, but that does not mean there is not a huge market for them.
Consider yourself an expert? Websites like Killer Guides allows you to write an eBook which you can then sell. You can also try this on Amazon or your own site but the market on Killer Guides is much larger.
Many of the Lord of the Rings game guides – which are often more than 100 pages long, so do not be fooled into thinking it is a quick job – sell for $29.99 (around £18 or £19).

College Resources(Financial Aid)

Financial Aid

Everything comes at a price and education is no exception to the rule. Luckily, most online colleges and universities today offer lower tuition fees than your traditional 'brick and mortar' campus school. However, even if you were to make the choice to enroll in an online college, the cost will continue to remain a significant portion of the average student income.

The good news is that there are many financial aid solutions that can help you along your path to an education. Financial aid is a great way to invest in your future without having to struggle with the increasing upfront costs of a college degree. Many qualify for some type of financial aid. Whether you receive financial aid through the federal government or through private financial institutions such as your local bank, there should be little trouble involved in receiving the money you need to start a successful path as a student.

Most people begin the financial aid process by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), offered through the federal government. After the application process is completed, you will be notified and either rewarded a financial aid package or denied financial aid completely. If you are awarded a financial package by the federal government it may include grants, scholarships, and loans such as the Stafford or Perkins loans, to name a few. If you do not qualify for federal financial aid, then the next step would be to apply for a loan at your local bank or inquire into the other various federal financial aid and state run programs by following the links below.

OSU Gets First Black President in School’s 144-Year History

Ohio State University (OSU) Board of Trustees chose University of California, Irvine Chancellor (UC Irvine) Dr. Michael Drake as the school's 15th president, effective June 30. Drake, OSU's first black president, will replace Gordon Gee who retired amid controversy surrounding his comments criticizing Notre Dame, Roman Catholics and the Southeastern Conference.

The trustees wanted their next president to have a good understanding of fundraising, academic medical centers, academics and athletics among others."Dr. Drake was the strongest and the consensus candidate," said Jeffrey Wadsworth, an Ohio State University trustee who led the search. "From the very beginning Drake was the focus of our attention because of his experience and qualities," William Funk, the head of a search firm who was looking out for a new president for OSU, abc News reports.

Drake hopes to build on the success established by his predecessors. He considers OSU to be one of the prominent institutions in the country.

"The trajectory of Ohio State and the power of Ohio State are admired and understood throughout the world of higher education," Drake said.

In 2005, the 63-year-old California educator was named the fifth chancellor of UC Irvine. Under Drake's leadership, undergraduate applications increased by more than 90 percent and the four-year graduation rate rose by nearly 20 percent. During his tenure, first public law school in California was created in more than 40 years. He also introduced new programs in public health, pharmaceutical sciences and nursing science. Apart from the administrative position, Drake also served as a professor of ophthalmology.

Prior to UC Irvine, Drake served as vice president for health affairs for five years at the University of California system and professor at the UC San Francisco School of Medicine for more than two decades. He is currently a member of the NCAA Division I board of directors.

Drake earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from UC San Francisco.

Gee, the former president of OSU, called Drake "a world-class academic and an exceptionally able and seasoned higher education leader." Drake, who knows Gee for several years now, hopes to work with him on a professional basis.
